How quickly can I change sieves on a standard hammer mill?
Changing sieves with a traditional hammer mill takes longer than with an automatic or semi-automatic hammer mill. The hammer mill must be stopped as soon as the feed of raw material is stopped. With a large, heavy hammer mill, it can take up to 15 minutes to stop. If the hammer mill is equipped with a frequency control, possibly with braking resistors, this time can be reduced to 1 to 2 minutes. Then the hammer mill is opened with the appropriate tool. This takes 1 minute per side. Then the sieves are replaced. This takes 1 to 2 minutes per side. Then the hammer mill is closed again. This takes 1 to 2 minutes per side. Finally, the mill is started up again, which takes 1 to 2 minutes.
The whole procedure takes at least 10 minutes and is highly dependent on the speed of the operator and whether or not the hammer mill can be slowed down.
